Workshop tool

A daily tool for automotive technicians. Comprehensive on the web and fast in the app.

The consumption of vehicle parts, especially in the racing division of Škoda Motorsport, is nothing short of extraordinary. It comes as no surprise that such a renowned manufacturer of WRC and other racing vehicles requires a state-of-the-art, meticulously designed system to manage and monitor their operations. This includes inventory tracking, parts management, assemblies (integrated functional units of vehicles), and vehicles themselves, extending all the way to the management of race trucks, production facilities, warehouses, and even the decommissioning process.

In essence, the entire lifecycle of Škoda Motorsport vehicles is documented and managed within a single tool Škoda Motorsport Parts. We had the distinct honor of redesigning and rebuilding this critical system from the ground up, entirely under our expert guidance.

Solution

Digital workshop management for mechanics. For rally. For motorsport.

A key aspect of this project was seamlessly embedding the entire solution into the existing design language of Škoda Auto. Leveraging their current corporate identity and design system allowed us to maintain visual and functional consistency across various applications within the Škoda Auto ecosystem. However, given the complexity and sophistication of the solution, we had to extend the design system by creating custom components. These additions ensured the tool functioned exactly as intended, meeting the precise needs and expectations of mechanics and staff alike

Navigation

Straightforward navigation saves valuable seconds. Search hunts down milliseconds like a rally car chasing the finish line.

The core of the entire system is anchored in a streamlined, high-contrast navigation bar, featuring 30% fewer items than the previous solution. Our goal was to design navigation that is both clear and accessible, always in plain sight, ensuring seamless transitions between critical sections without hesitation. An Admin section was also incorporated, visible only to users with the appropriate permissions.

The navigation underwent extensive testing. For a long time, it featured a light background, but nearly in the final stages, it became clear this scheme was not effective. We pivoted, redesigning the navigation with a high-contrast approach that performs significantly better. This evolution highlights the fact that our designers remain actively involved throughout the development process, ensuring the highest standards and adaptability.

Data-centered

Complex and intricate data, effortlessly accessible. Just like turning the wheel.

Tens of thousands of records processed annually. Our guiding principles were clarity, usability, and accessibility. To achieve this, we implemented a dual-view system: users can toggle between a compact view, where rows are smaller to display more entries in the viewport, or a more spacious view with larger, more readable rows for enhanced clarity. Since this system is a daily tool for its operators, we ensured no detail was left to chance.

In a system handling such vast amounts of data, filtering and search are absolutely essential. We integrated OpenSearch for lightning-fast results, ensuring users get what they need instantly. Filters, on the other hand, are designed as intuitive contextual cards. These not only make filtering straightforward but also remain active throughout the user's session, providing a seamless and efficient experience.

Monitoring

Performance forged into functionality, streamlined for the digital track.

At the core of the entire system lies the part—a fundamental yet the most complex data entity in the database. The part is central to the majority of system functions, with the primary focus on mileage tracking. Compared to the original version, we completely overhauled the workflows and structure, especially around inspection processes.

In our approach, an inspection is defined as a predefined assembly of parts required for a vehicle to participate in a specific type of race. These inspections are performed automatically and after every operation, ensuring the system always provides a real-time overview of the parts currently on the vehicle.

We took this even further. During the initial stages of system design, we encountered real-world challenges tied to the P versus NP problem due to the exponentially branching inspections. Through computational, data, and process optimization, we overcame this challenge, once again demonstrating our dedication to delivering solutions, no matter the complexity. And ultimately, we succeeded in delivering exactly what was needed!

Mobile application

Serving as the extended arm of mechanics. Mobile applications fulfill this role quite literally.

The mobile application is primarily designed for scanning vehicle parts using NFC chips, tags, or cards. This functionality significantly streamlines access to parts and their documentation. The app supports batch operations, enabling mechanics to quickly scan and process required parts during tests or trial runs. Actions such as transferring parts, logging mileage, or performing simple inspections can be carried out with ease. While the app is tailored for use by mechanics and workshop staff, the web application is primarily intended for office operations.

The application is exclusively developed for Android using Kotlin. A standout feature is the integration of generated data models from the OpenAPI specification, shared seamlessly with the system's back-end, which we also built entirely in-house. This approach significantly accelerates the development process, saving both time and resources.

Administration

Packed with management and customization options. Under the hood, it's incredibly complex. On the surface, it's almost ridiculously simple.

To ensure absolute control and visibility, the system was designed from the ground up to log every single change, no matter how minor, with precise timestamps and user identification.

The administration module defines parts, kits, assemblies, vehicles, permissions, clients, and storage facilities. It directly influences operations across the entire system. However, it’s worth noting that access to this section is strictly reserved for authorized personnel only.

Vast UX/UI

An invisible mountain of time, effort, and burnt brain cells to make it all work. But trust us. It’s worth it!

The extensive UX/UI design was driven entirely by the real-world scenarios and operational needs of mechanics, workshops, and vehicle testing and racing processes for Škoda Motorsport. The wireframing and design phases were far more intensive and demanding than in a typical development cycle. However, thanks to this meticulous effort, we were able to execute and implement subsequent development phases much more efficiently.

Never underestimate the importance of usability and clarity in your digital solutions. They truly make all the difference!
